A large black pre-engineered metal building with Black Button Distilling sign

New York’s Only Purpose-Built Rickhouse

Used to store and age bourbon barrels, this 30,000SF uninsulated structure may seem basic, but it was carefully designed to meet Black Button’s needs. A fully customizable Pre-Engineered Metal Building was the best solution for this project. From the wide-open space inside, to the loading dock, to the bold statement exterior color, this building meets all Black Button’s needs.

When Black Button Distilling, an award-winning craft spirits distiller, decided to build New York State’s only purpose-built rickhouse, they worked with Maguire Properties to find the right site. Mitchell Design Build was contracted to provide Integrated Design Build services including Project Solution Consulting, Code Consulting, Site Preparation, Architecture and Construction.

A rickhouse is a building used to store and age bourbon barrels. A fully customizable Pre-Engineered Metal Building provided the best solution for this client. While this 30,000 SF, uninsulated structure may seem basic, it was carefully designed to meet Black Button’s needs.  To maximize the open space within the structure, the building was clearspanned so that there would be no need for interior support columns. Mechanically, the building includes a dry sprinkler system since the building is not heated. The building also features a grade door and a loading dock. Thoughtful design was employed in choosing the color of the building as well, with an all-black building that makes a statement, and reflects Black Button’s brand.

Soil conditions at the site were challenging, as the soil was loose and lacked substantial bearing capacity. Site preparation included compacting the existing soil and building the site up with engineered fill and stone to provide a stable sub-base for a floating slab. The slab was poured to 12 inches thick at the center and 24 inches thick around the edges, sitting entirely on the compacted stone fill.

The Integrated Design Build process allowed for construction to be completed efficiently, taking just 6 months from start to finish.
